Our first unit in EL is about understanding the struggles of a new immigrant to the United States during the 1930's. It follows the story of a young wealthy girl from Mexico who is forced to immigrate to the United States and becomes a migrant farm worker. It also deals with understanding human rights by digging into the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We read the novel Esperanza Rising, and the students really love it!
